Are You Being True To Yourself In Your Daily Life
“This above all; to thine own self be true.”
Ever heard of the phrase, “Fake it till you make it?” It’s one of the best known phrases people use when they are trying to make something of themselves but haven’t quite become successful as of yet. If you want to be true to yourself then faking it is the wong way to go.
Many of these people think it’s okay to act this way but according to Bestselling author Ryan Holiday, “Yet what is the advice that we give most people? It is exactly the opposite of this! Fake it until you make it. Act the part. Market your best qualities the loudest. What are we telling people here? We’re telling them, in short, to over-promise. We’re asking them to misrepresent the numbers — about their skills, their confidence, their understanding — and hope they don’t get caught.”
To be someone who lives life being true to themselves may feel like a fake until they find their real purpose but doesn’t that defeat the real purpose of being an authentic person?
I would say so but many have taken the path of least resistance so they can reach the top the quickest they can. That means taking shortcuts that can come back to haunt you later on.
Doesn’t that defeat the purpose of who you really are if you misrepresent yourself, your skills, and your confidence?
Society has forced this type of thinking on people because no one wants to appear uninformed or out of the loop so they play the game. A game they think they can pull off if they act the part.
Kimberly White, who is the senior director of operations at Vacasa, a tech rental management company, was interviewed by Fortune and stated, “Contrived confidence is artificial and easy to spot, and I’ve found that authenticity and transparency earn you greater respect, anyway. “Say, ‘I don’t know, but I’ll find out,’ and you’ll build a stronger relationship than if you spin an answer out of buzzwords and wishful thinking.”
Kimberley hit the nail on the head when she talks about contrived confidence. How many people have you met who act like they are the most confident person in the world until the shit hits the fan? That’s what separates the real from the imagined.
When we’re kids growing up, we all want to be someone special. To get there, many of us take different pathways but when things don’t go our way we decide to make changes that we’ll regret later on.
The idea is to know who you are and who you want to be. Follow your heart. Follow the path you want to take and “Just do it” as Nike says.
The Importance Of Being True To Yourself
“Be true to your heart… put your whole heart and soul into it, and then whatever you do, it will shine through.”
How important is it to be true to yourself?
Everyday, we live according to the ideals that were handed down by our parents and grandparents but society likes to take a big bite out of those values. It wants us to conform to it’s way of living, thinking and acting. You. my friend have a big decision to make. Which way are you going to go?
Those that truly love themselves have the courage to live with an inner freedom most can only hope to imitate.
Imitate. That’s a big keyword here. Even though imitation is a form of flattery, it is not reality. It is living a lie that will eventually catch up with you when you can least afford it..
Do you have the courage to accept yourself when others don’t or won’t accept you?
How do you deal with peer pressure? Do you do things to please others so you will be popular or well-liked?
Many of us go against our own principals and do stupid things just to be accepted. Common sense flies out the window and we are stuck in confusion when we get caught red-handed. Just pretending to be someone else for the sake of acceptance feels dirty. It’s like playing a game where everyone knows your secret and there’s no place to hide.
Ever felt like you were living a lie? It’s not a happy feeling. I’ve been there and done that. When I was younger, I tried to act as if I knew more than what I did about a certain subject and when someone called me out on it, guess what? They made me look foolish.
It all comes down to self respect. How much of it do you want to keep and how much do you want to give away?
Which leads us to the next step which is how to stay true to yourself.
Here are 7 ways you can stay true to yourself in a world filled with inauthentic people trying too hard be authentic.
- Be responsible for what you say and do
- Get your mind and heart to work in unison
- Learn how to express your true feelings
- Stop trying to please everyone and start pleasing yourself
- Stop sacrificing your needs in place of others desires
- Connect on a very deep and personal plane instead of being shallow
- Be honest and transparent in your words, thoughts and dealings with others
If you can master these seven ways you can be truthful in everything you do and you won’t have to worry about what others think, do or say. You will be comfortable enough in your own skin to be who you really are.
So, how does self-respect and authenticity come together?
Z. Hereford states that “Self-respect comes from being true to who you really are and from acting in accordance with your fundamental nature.”
It is this nature that guides us as we go through life. When we disregard this nature, well, that’s where problems arise. She goes on to say, “When you respect yourself, others will respect you. They will sense that you are strong and capable of standing up for yourself and your beliefs.”
It seems self-respect is in short supply these days. Just read the daily newspapers or watch the news on television and you will see just how little respect most people have for themselves.
Despite all that we have learned throughout our lives we still find ourselves in the midst of trying to prove we are worthy of being loved and cared for even if we don’t actually believe it ourselves. It’s funny, most people don’t have the balls to allow their own individuality and uniqueness to shine through because of what others might say or do.
Those that let others define who they are on the inside are just chameleons on the outside. They go through life wearing a mask to hide the beauty that is deep within themselves because they never gave anyone the chance to get to know them on an intimate basis.
Why is this? Fear.
Fear of being hurt, fear of of non-acceptance, and fear of being different. But why is being different so bad? Why is being different unacceptable in society?
No one likes to be left out or to be on the outside looking in. No one likes to be an outcast. We feel better when we’re part of a group but the group can influence us to the point where we lose our authenticity and become just another piece of the collective.
So how do we change this thought process and what can we do to stay true to ourselves?
7 Tips For Being True To Yourself
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.”
Are you committed to being the person you want others to see?
Everyday, you have the choice to be true to your inner self but it isn’t easy. You’re going to have people question your motives and talk about you behind your back. You’re going to have to make decisions that will rock you to the core but you have to remain steadfast.
In Romans 12:2, the Apostle Paul talks about how we are to act and why we must remain vigilant to who we are. “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”
Life isn’t easy (you already know that) but to live a life according to God’s will, you must learn and implement these tips to remain true to the authentic self.
1- Don’t Be A Follower – Ever since I was a little boy, my mother instilled in me this one valuable lesson. Don’t be a follower, be a leader. This means find your own voice and lead from within. When everyone is playing follow the leader, be the kind of person who leads from your strength.
2- Be Honest – No matter what you do honesty is always the best policy. If you can’t be honest with yourself, how can you be honest with others? No one wants to be around people who aren’t honest so practice honesty at every turn even if it means being outcast or by the crowd. Take Jesus as an example. He was brutally honesty and those who couldn’t take his honesty left. Only those who truly listened understood his message.
3- Create Your Own Pathway In Life – Everyone is different and has a different purpose in life so choose your own pathway wisely and follow your heart. Life isn’t about following the paths others have made before but finding your own way in life and what makes you happy and fulfilled.
4- Think For Yourself – If you can’t think for yourself how are you going to be a leader? How are you going to make your own way? If you can’t think for yourself you know someone else will do it for you. Thinking for yourself allows you to learn from your mistakes and gives you confidence in your own abilities. Only you have the power to shape your own destiny.
5- Seek The Truth In Everything You Do – Truth is what each and everyone of us is after yet few of us actually find it. We take whatever society gives us without first testing it and figuring out if it is really the truth or not. Sometimes, the truth is not what we expect and can be painful but it’s all part of life.
6- Learn How To Connect With Others – Connections are incredibly important to making your way in life. Hearing how other people have dealt with their struggles and challenges is a great learning tool to help us overcome our own hardships. It allows us to be humble as well as to validate our own values and beliefs.
7- Share Your Story – As good as it is to learn from others, you must also promote your own life story. What you have learned and experienced can not only help others but show others who and what you are all about.
Freedom is a word that’s based on the truth. The truth will set you free but you have to be authentic. Being a cheap copy of an original is laziness at it’s best and I know that’s not what you want to be.
Go ahead, open your heart… fly free, and be an original. God only made one of you because you are one of a kind so don’t try to copy others. make your own mark in life by being the real you.
