How To Love Your Neighbor As Yourself
Here is your Daily Devotional Prayer for October 18, 2016 brought to you by The Plough
Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.‘
Lord our God, through your Spirit help us to live in love to you. Open our eyes to see your goodness and truth surrounding us your children, even in this troubled world. We look to you, Almighty Father. Protect us in these difficult times. We plead for our country, entrusting it to your care so that love to you may be awakened. Where shall we turn except to you? Where shall we find help except in Jesus Christ, whom you have sent to us to win the victory, to subdue and end all evil in heaven, on earth, and under the earth, and to become Lord, to the glory of your name? Amen.
Daily Commentary: When God asks us to love our neighbors as ourselves He is showing us what unconditional love is all about. It is not about caring for others after we have taken care of ourselves and it is not about caring for those who we care about. No, it goes much deeper than that. It goes to the very heart of what a Christian is about.
In a world that values money, power, consumption and selfishness, Christian values are at odds with what society expects. We are to give without expectation, help without compensation and do with reservation. It is giving as if our life depended on it.
My gift is my unconditional love. Whether I am rich or poor, it doesn’t matter. What matters is making a concrete effort to help when help is needed. In Matthew 25:35-37, we see this attitude in action:
“For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave Me something to drink, I was a stranger and you took Me in, I was naked and you clothed Me, I was sick and you looked after Me, I was in prison and you visited Me.’ Then the righteous will answer Him, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You something to drink?”
Love thy neighbor the same way as God has loved you and you will be blessed for you unselfishness and care for those in need.
