Sinners Repent!

Jesus calls out the sinners

Here is your Daily Devotional Prayer for October 15, 2016 brought to you by The Plough

On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. But go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:12–13

Dear Father in heaven, we come into your presence as imperfect, sinful children, who do many foolish things and who are involved in much that is evil and corrupt. We come to you, Father, knowing that your fatherly love is with us through all eternity. Be gracious to us and free us from all the harm and injury we are bound to suffer in this earthly life. May the grace your kingdom brings on earth finally blot out the sins of all people, so that as your children they may rejoice because you have helped them. May your name be praised among all people. Amen.

Daily Commentary: Jesus has always called us to repent of our sins because we all suffer from the sickness of sin. Those haughty enough to believe they are not sinful are just fooling themselves.  Jesus is the doctor and has the cure in the form of His resurrection. Without it, we would all die without fulfilling the promise of God, mainly,  Jesus dying on the cross.

It is Jesus’ healing ministry that comes to free us of the penalty of sin… which, of course is death. Instead, the Lord came to live with humans to preach the Gospel. He ate and spent time with sinners to call them to God’s final banquet…  “He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.”  Matthew 22:3 Yet “Many are invited, but few are chosen.”  Matthew 22:14

We must recognize our need for God’s help.  Matthew Henry (a 17th century Puritan minister and preeminent devotional Bible commentator) states, “The gospel call is a call to repentance; a call to us to change our minds, and to change our ways. If the children of men had not been sinners, there had been no need for Christ to come among them. Let us examine whether we have found out our sickness, and have learned to follow the directions of our great Physician.”

We are all in need of healing. That is why we come to Jesus. His unconditional love brings us to Him and His word heals our hearts. When we repent, Jesus, the good shepherd, is joyful for one of His flock has been found.
