Negative Thoughts Bring Negative Results
Most of us at one time or another have the fought the battle between positive and negative thoughts in our head. For some, these voices are so subtle and deceptive that we think they are there to protect us and keep us away from harm but in reality they have much to much influence on how we deal with life.
We have been told to always remain positive and that negativity begets negative results but it goes much deeper than that. For some of us, negative thoughts can impact our beliefs, our own self worth and at their worst can be so destructive that we fall into deep depression.
Friends and family tell us to snap out of it and that things will eventually get better but there is a much easier and helpful way to deal with negative thoughts that keeps us from falling into the pit of negative thinking. One of the best ways to deal the negative inner voices in your head is to practice the art of mindfulness. To be mindful is to be more aware of your thoughts, feelings and actions in the present moment.
The main problem with not being mindful of what we are thinking is how we treat our thoughts. Everything we feel, everything we say and everything we do comes from what we are thinking so being mindful of what we are thinking allows us to control our though patterns in a way that avoids negative ramifications in our daily life.
The Link Between Habits And Negativity
Do you have the bad habit of dwelling on your negative thoughts? Our habits influence how we think so if we are able to change our habits then it stands to reason we can change our negative thought patterns. This is much easier than trying to mentally resist the thought with just our willpower. In fact, the more you try to will it out of your mind the stronger the pattern becomes.
This is where changing your habits helps break the chains your negative thoughts have on you and gives you the chance to bring more positive thoughts and affirmations into your life. Simply starting a new habit will not work. Everyone knows that if you try a new resolution if will usually fail in a short period of time. This is why we want to redirect the thoughts. It’s kind of like channeling your energy to a new positive course by mentally conditioning your subconscious to accept new positive commands.
Your habits are all based on three different images in your mind. The first is visual image. We get them from visual stimulation. The second is kinesthetic (what you feel in your gut) and the last is taken from auditory (learned from what you hear). We can also use these images to reprogram our thought patterns to become a more positive person and reap the benefits of positive energy.
How To Turn Those Negative Thoughts Into Positive Energy
There is an art to turning your negative thoughts in to positive energy and it is very easy to put into action. You see, what you focus on in your thoughts are what you will see in the world around you. Refocus your energies on positive outcomes and you will start the reprogramming of your mind.
There are 5 steps that you will need to take to change your negative thought patterns:
Step 1 – Turn your negative thoughts into positive mental images
Everything around you is screaming to be heard and when you have the habit of listening to the negative thoughts in your head, the positive parts of life do not have a chance to shine through. The idea here is to listen to that voice in your head and turn it into a mental picture that causes pain. You want that painful visual image to overtake the negative thought so that every time you have that thought it will be too painful to think about.
Step 2 – Replace the negative thought with an empowering positive thought
This is the key to overcoming your negative thought pattern. Once you have a painful mental picture of that thought, turn it around and select a positive and empowering image with the corresponding positive thought. This way when you start thinking that negative thought it will be redirected to the positive image and thought and it will quickly turn your emotional feeling from sad to happy.
When you chain the positive image with the positive thought you cement the positive over the negative. You want to continually rehearse this so that you automatically bring up the positive thought and corresponding image as a defense mechanism against your negativity.
Step 3 – Change your body image
One of the chief reasons we tend to be negative is based on how we treat ourselves. The idea comes from how we stand. The better our posture the better we will view ourselves and the less negative we will feel. Slouching leads to lower self-esteem and a definite lack of confidence. That emotional state leads directly to negativity. When we sit up straight in a confident manner it releases endorphins in our brain. These endorphins make us feel happy and that happiness leads to positive feelings. Standing straight up gives confidence which counteracts the feelings of negativity.
Step 4 – Be creative
Being creative is a positive outlet for your thoughts and it gets our minds off of the things that bother us as well as elevating our moods. The idea that accomplishment serves a purpose here is a strong counter to the debilitating power of negative thinking. Creativity releases stress which allows you to focus on the positive aspects of life. The more creative you can become the more time you can spend on positive thoughts which continually reinforce your positive thought patterns.
Step 5 – Learn to be grateful
Being grateful is one of the most underappreciated facets of life. We get so caught up in what we have as opposed to what others posses we forget to be thankful to God for what he has given us. If you constantly compare yourself to others, obviously you will feel you don’t measure up based on inflated criteria which don’t really matter at all. What matters is that you do your best, have confidence in your abilities and be grateful for what you have. Learning humility is a great teacher and one that can help you become a positive person who can be a great role model for others.
Once you have put these five steps into action the goal is to make them a habit that you can live with. This way when negativity rears its ugly head, you have a plan to combat it and counteract the effects it has on your thought patterns.
